The concept of fluorescence was discovered in the late-nineteenth century, but due to its relative complexity it was not practical to mass produce fluorescent lighting until about the 1930s. However, fluorescent lights have gained more and more popularity due to their high efficiency, lower operating cost, and ability to fit into ever-smaller fixtures.
